    In the 1950s, the late Dr. Perry Sperber of Daytona Beach was instrumental in turning the site into a tourist attraction that featured a small animal zoo, a Seminole Indian exhibit and a tram that transported visitors throughout the property's botanical gardens. In 1963, J. Saxton Lloyd donated the property to Volusia County and it has since been operated and maintained by the nonprofit Botanical Gardens of Volusia. (Daytona Beach News Journal -- Local)
